Operation =
Blunt 2
As many of you will be aware, the Met Police has just
started Operation Blunt2, an initiative to stop the killing of young
people by weapons on the streets of London. As a result, residents of
Hackney may see an increase in proactive enforcement activity across=
the
borough. A briefing document conveys the aims/messages of Operation
Blunt2 This is for internal briefing use, e.g. school assemblies, st=
aff
meetings etc., rather than wider distribution.
A Hackney anti-knife leaflet is available distributio=
n to
those in front-line roles in direct contact with children and young
people. The electronic version should be printed out A5 size. Hard c=
opies
will be sent to schools in the internal post.

Transition=
conference
Providing information to parents around transition
(starting school, moving to Year 1 and starting secondary school) is=
one
of the elements of the Parenting Support core offer for extended sch=
ools.
The purpose of this morning conference is to raise
awareness about the support available to Hackney parents/carers duri=
ng
the process of transition from primary school to secondary school.&n=
bsp;
It will also highlight the good work taking place in the borough.
The conference is aimed at parents/carers of year 5, =
or 6
pupils, and will take place on Thursday 3 July 2008 at Morley Hall, =
125
– 127, Mare Street, London, E8 3RH.
Letters will be sent, to head teachers and key staff
responsible for transition, requesting your support in promoting this
important event.
Flyers and booking forms will also be sent to
schools. All completed booking forms are to be returned to Ros=
ie
French, at The Learning Trust, by Friday 20 June.

supporting
Extended Schools
WITH more and more schools looking at how they can pr=
ovide
Extended School services there has been a shift in focus for many Pa=
rent
Teacher Associations (PTAs).
With more and more research evidence showing the posi=
tive
impact parental involvement has on the educational achievement of
children a partnership between parents and schools is critical. This
remains true for extended services.
For many, a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is an ob=
vious
start point in establishing this important partnership. However, the
traditional function of a PTA as a fundraising body is evolving.
PTAs are working with schools to provide after school
activities and clubs for children. This may be entirely funded by PTA
fundraising efforts or involve a cost to parents. Benefits to parent=
s are
wide ranging and will include the opportunity for their child to try=
a
new activity to providing an alternative childcare option.
The National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associat=

(NCPTA), an independent charity, provides information and guidance to
PTAs keen to support extended services at their child’s school=
.

The Learning Trust is now recruiting for Cohort 8 (st=

Sept/Oct 08) for the Generic HLTA and/or HLTA Secondary Maths and Sc=
ience
Specialist training.
Headteachers’ or nominated representatives are
invited to attend a briefing on the HLTA application and assessment
process. Teaching assistants and LSA’s who wish to develop the=
ir
existing skills and knowledge with a view to achieving HLTA status a=
re
also invited to attend.
This will be a very informative session and the inten=
ded
outcomes of the briefing are to share:
