Schools of=
creativity
Stoke Newington School was announced on 14 May as one=
of
England's 30 ‘Schools of Creativity’, along with Hackney
primary schools, Jubilee and Lauriston. They were selected from hund=
reds
of schools working with Creative Partnerships, the flagship programme
managed by Arts Council England.
As pioneers of creativity in education, the schools w=
ill
receive funding to develop and promote creative learning as part of a
national project. They will explore cutting-edge approaches to creat=
ive
teaching techniques in partnership with a wide range of creative
practitioners, and will share the benefits of their approaches both =
in
their local area, and across England.

Turkish, K=
urdish and
Turkish Cypriots (TKC) week 9 -13 June 2008
The Learning Trust is celebrating the positive
contribution, achievements and culture of TKC pupils and communities.
This is the second year of celebrating the culture of Turkish, Kurdi=
sh
and Turkish Cypriots in Hackney schools. We would like to provide
opportunities for all pupils to explore how our society and culture =
have
been enriched by the immigration of TKC communities in Britain.
In May, schools will be sent a pack of culturally
inclusive curriculum resources to help planning their lessons in Jun=
e.
This pack comprises of lesson plans and bilingual resources and will=
be
available on the Learning Live website. Schools will also receive a =
list
of TKC organisations offering workshops during the TKC week. The Lea=
rning
Trust is offering to match–fund the workshops for interested
schools.
The TKC week will also be a good opportunity to get
Turkish and Kurdish speaking parents involved in organising events at
school, cooking traditional food or organising assemblies and exhibi=
tions
about Turkey and Cyprus. If you already have contact with Turkish and
Kurdish speaking organisations that you would like to work with duri=
ng
the TKC week please let me know who they are and what sort of servic=
es
they provide so that I can disseminate the details to other schools.=

year of action, we will be celebrating good practise in Hackney at t=

summers’ Sustainable Schools event. We are looking for nominat=
ions
from schools who have done great work in the following three categor=
ies :

– (e.g. sustainable procurement, using
goods and services of high environmental and ethical standards =
from
local sources where practicable, and increasing value for money=
by
reusing, repairing and recycling as many goods as possible) =
- Buildings and Ground=
s – (e.g. sustainable design features, =
use
of green building technologies, furnishings and equipment; using
grounds to enable pupils to learn about the natural world and
sustainable living, for example through food growing and wildli=
fe
conservation)
- Food and Drink – (e.g. supplying healthy, local and
sustainable food and drink, showing strong commitments to the
environment, social responsibility and animal welfare in their =
food
and drink provision, and maximising their use of local supplier=

an example of good practise. Decisions will be made in the week

ing a PTA
Starting a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a very=
good
way to bring together parents, teachers and others to raise money an=
d to
support the school. It provides an opportunity for everyone to work
together towards a common goal and is open to all parents and teache=
rs
even if they only have a small amount of time available to get invol=
ved.
Usually, a PTA is formed to fundraise for the benefit=
of
the pupils at the school. Another important role for a PTA is as a w=
ay
for parents to become more involved with their children’s scho=
ol.
Working in partnership with the school, a PTA can help to develop st=
rong
links between home and school.
The National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associat=
ions
(NCPTA), an independent charity, provides guidance and information on
starting a PTA.

Following the success of last
year’s inaugural ‘Sustainable Schools in Hackney’
teacher training event, you are again invited to join the Hackney
Environmental Education Network (HEEN) for an informative and fun-pa=
cked
afternoon at the farm. This is a great chance to learn more about the
DCSF ‘Sustainable Schools’ standards and the ‘Year of Food and
Farming’. Meet fellow school staff, find out about=
good
practise in Hackney, and take away great activity ideas from HEEN fo=
r how
you can get involved and take positive action at your own school =

will also help you meet criteria for achieving National Healthy Scho=
ol
Status.
The day will include lunch, an opportunity to view
displays and network with local environmental groups who can support=
you,
learn about current initiatives and available funding, hear case stu=
dies
presented by students from other Hackney schools, and take part in
workshops linked to the 8 doorway themes of ‘Sustainable
