SRE survey=
The delivery of good Sex and Relationship Education (=
SRE)
is crucial in keeping young people safe and healthy as well as helpi=
ng to
bring down teenage pregnancy rates. Progress has been made in
improving SRE, but delivery is still patchy. We know that many young
people feel they are not getting sex and relationship education which
provides them with the knowledge and skills they need to make safe a=
nd
well-informed choices, and delay sex until they are ready.
A review of the delivery of SRE in schools is current=
ly
being carried out by the DCSF as per its commitment in the
Children’s Plan. As a part of this, the Sex Education Fo=
rum
has been commissioned to launch an online survey to find out what
teachers need in order to offer good quality SRE to children and you=
ng
people.
This is an opportunity for all teachers who teach SRE=
to
highlight what will enable them to improve quality and consistency in
SRE. The survey is open until Monday 12 May 2008. Please

Turkish, K=
urdish and
Turkish Cypriots (TKC) week 9 -13 June 2008
The Learning Trust is celebrating the positive
contribution, achievements and culture of TKC pupils and communities.
This is the second year of celebrating the culture of Turkish, Kurdi=
sh
and Turkish Cypriots in Hackney schools. We would like to provide op=
portunities
for all pupils to explore how our society and culture have been enri=
ched
by the immigration of TKC communities in Britain.
In May, schools will be sent a pack of culturally
inclusive curriculum resources to help planning their lessons in Jun=
e. This
pack comprises of lesson plans and bilingual resources and will be
available on the Learning Live website. Schools will also receive a =
list
of TKC organisations offering workshops during the TKC week. The Lea=
rning
Trust is offering to match–fund the workshops for interested
schools.
The TKC week will also be a good opportunity to get
Turkish and Kurdish speaking parents involved in organising events at
school, cooking traditional food or organising assemblies and exhibi=
tions
about Turkey and Cyprus. If you already have contact with Turkish and
Kurdish speaking organisations that you would like to work with duri=
ng
the TKC week please let me know who they are and what sort of servic=
es
they provide so that I can disseminate the details to other schools.=

The National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associat=

(NCPTA) knows that Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) work hard all =

round raising much needed school funds. There are a wide variety of
fundraising events that PTAs have found to be successful. Some are m=

profitable than others but raising money is not always the only
objective. Improving partnerships between parents and teachers=

between home and school plays a vital part too.<=

Research shows that the 12% of all Hackney’s Pr=
imary
school children and 13% of Secondary school pupils are from refugee =
and
asylum seeking families. Approximately 30% of refugees who come to t=
he UK
have professional skills and experience, including many who have wor=
ked
as teachers.
To make better use of existing skills and experience =
within
the refugee population, the DCSF has established ‘Opening Doors for Refugee
Teachers’, a network that identifies and trains re=
fugee
teachers in London and connects those who are looking for work with =
those
who are looking for teachers.
At this free event you will hear from schools that ha=
ve
been involved with the network already, meet refugee teachers, access
free job brokerage and find out about current courses for support ro=
les
and QTS.
Schools that have employed refugee teachers have
highlighted that they:

Hackney's 2nd Family Learning Conference will be held
during Adult Learners' Week on Monday May 19 at Sutton House from 9.=

till 3.30pm. “Well organised, informative, and very
engaging”, was how one delegate described last year’s ev=
ent.
The Family Learning Conference is aimed at practition=
ers
and those interested in starting or expanding their Family Learning
provision.
It promises to be a great day with everyone getting t=
he
chance to sample some of the exciting Family Learning activities that
have been going on in Hackney this year and hopefully come away with=
lots
of ideas for their own Family Learning programmes. There will also b=

colourful performance by parents from Shoreditch Trust, a presentati=

ach
to Family Learning and a number of creative workshops from local

Becoming Sustainable Schools in the year of food and farming! =
Monday 9 June 2008 (12.30 – 5.00pm) at Hackney =

Farm
Following the success of last
year’s inaugural ‘Sustainable Schools in Hackney’
teacher training event, you are again invited to join the Hackney
Environmental Education Network (HEEN) for an informative and fun-pa=
cked
afternoon at the farm. This is a great chance to learn more about the
DCSF ‘Sustainable Schools’ standards and the ‘Year of Food and
Farming’. Meet fellow school staff, find out about=
good
practise in Hackney, and take away great activity ideas from HEEN fo=
r how
you can get involved and take positive action at your own school =

that will also help you meet criteria for achieving National Healthy
School Status.
The day will include lunch, an opportunity to view
displays and network with local environmental groups who can support=
you,
learn about current initiatives and available funding, hear case stu=
dies
presented by students from other Hackney schools, and take part in
workshops linked to the 8 doorway themes of ‘Sustainable
