Key Stage 2 results increase again
Liz Hutchinsonelizabeth.hutchinson@learningtrust.co.uk
Corporate Communications Manager0208 820 7474

Hackney’s primary schools are doing better than ever, government data has revealed. The percentage of children at Key Stage Two (years 3-6) achieving the expected level in English and Maths has increased by 14% over the last five years, to 71%.

Just five years ago, for the academic year 2005/2006, the difference between the achievements of Hackney pupils at this stage in their education versus the national average was 13%. This has since decreased dramatically to 3%, the biggest improvement by any education authority in the country.

Parkwood Primary School is the highest performing in the borough at Key Stage 2, with 95% of students achieving a Level 4+ in English and Maths.

Headteacher of Parkwood Primary School, Pat Cardis, said, I’m delighted that our pupils continue to meet these high standards. This could not have been achieved without dedicated staff at every level and, most importantly, pupils who are keen, eager to learn and supported by their families.”

Deputy Chief Executive of the Learning, Trust Steve Belk, said “The fact that we are the most improved education authority in the country over the past five years is something that everyone working in education in Hackney – teachers, support staff and others – should be immensely proud of.”

Free School Meals Campaign

The Healthy Schools team have launched a Free School Meals campaign across Hackney Primary schools.

The campaign is aimed at parents who are eligible but not taking free school meals whilst engaging them at the same time in a conversation about healthy eating. On average a parent can save themselves £10 per week or £390 per year.

The campaign which will roll out across the school early in the New Year, is targeted at Primary schools though Secondary schools are free to use the material. For the moment, a poster, information leaflet for parents and a new application form are just the start.

guidance & information

SEN Funding Booklet
Andrew Leeandrew.lee@learningtrust.co.uk
Head of Educational Psychology Service020 8820 7520

Hackney mainstream schools have significant numbers of pupils who have been identified as needing additional support due to their Special Educational Needs (SEN). Schools are provided with significant resources to enable them to support pupils with SEN and it is very important that schools understand how much funding they receive and what it should/shouldn’t be used for.

All schools in the borough are expected to work within the same guidelines. The attached guidance can assist by providing simple explanations and answers to frequently asked questions. The guidance was updated in June 2010; it will be reviewed again shortly and a new version circulated once it has been produced.

For more information, or if you have any queries, please contact Andrew Lee, Neil Hudson or Claudio O’Garro.

The Common Support Framework & Information Sharing
Hilary Smithhilary.smith@learningtrust.co.uk
Strategy & Project Support Manager020 8820 7036

The Common Support Framework (CSF) is Hackney’s response to the need to provide appropriate, integrated and effective support for families in the most efficient way possible. It places an emphasis upon delivery plan(s) and outcomes rather than information gathering and duplicate assessments.

Everyone working with Children & Young People and their families in Hackney should know about and understand what the CSF is, as well as when and how they should use it. The CSF also relies on professionals working closely together to improve the outcomes of children & young people in Hackney.

As such, everyone working in the borough must be able to make confident & robust decisions when deciding when to share information, what to share and to whom. Whilst there is HM Government guidance setting out a series or principles behind sharing Information, knowing when and how to apply these to help children & young people can be a complex area.

To support this, we have developed a series of multi agency training sessions. The sessions are free of charge and open to anyone working or volunteering with children & young people in the borough.

The CSF brochure outlines the objectives and areas covered for each course, as well as when and where they are being held. Choose the right course for you, complete an application form and send this to CPD Admin.

London North Consortium has a number of fully funded Overseas Trained Teacher Programme places (OTTP), available to teachers who qualified overseas and are working in Hackney.

The OTTP prepares and assesses candidates for Qualified Teacher Status and (where appropriate) exemption from induction.

All OTTs are required to gain QTS in this country, within four calendar years of starting to teach in a state school. See Teachernet for more information. For full details of requirements, eligibility and on-line registration, please visit the London North Consortium.
