“Schools need to harness the knowledge and commitment of all those in their workforce if they are to continue to improve children’s educational experiences, raise their levels of achievement and ensure their well being. Schools are increasingly providing extended learning and care services in response to community needs. They will continue to extend their services and school support staff will play a crucial part in this work. In addition, the re-modelling of the school workforce, arising from the workload agreement in England and Wales, has led to the introduction of new roles such as cover supervisors and Higher Level Teaching Assistants. In this environment of transformation school support staff will need to develop the knowledge and skills needed to meet changing demands. There is a need for improvements in the training and development of the whole school workforce. This includes responsibility for bringing greater coherence to training and development; reducing skills gaps and shortages; putting in place solutions to develop capacity; and enabling school staff to develop their confidence and competence. “

Continuing Professional Development has a key role in raising standards within schools.
